New York DMV Approved Courses to Reduce Points and Insurance Premiums

by Seth Azria on 2/22/2010

If you have points on your driving license or would like the to reduce your car insurance premiums, the New York DMV has a "Point and Insurance Reduction Program" (PIRP).  This program includes approved courses offered by private companies called "course  sponsors." The courses review traffic laws and tips for safe driving including driver attitude and defensive driving techniques.

Once you complete the course you qualify you for:

  1. A reduction in your effective point total by up to 4 points, automatically applied to your record, and
  2. A 10% reduction in your automobile liability and collision insurance premiums, each year for three years.**

If have pleaded guilty to a speeding ticket or any other moving violation in the last 18-months, you have points on your license and taking one of these course would be a good idea if you are at risk for suspension. If you are not sure if you have points on your license, you can request a driving abstract from the New York DMV or your licensing state.

Warning: Points are Not "Removed"

A common belief about these driving courses is that they remove, or eliminate, points from a driver's record. This, unfortunately, does not occur. The points and conviction remain on your record along with another entry that you completed a course are eligible for your point total to be reduced by 4 for suspension purposes, if that becomes and issue.

In New York, acquiring 11 points in any 18-month period will subject a driver to suspension. If, however, that driver took a driving course, the DMV would disregard 4 of those points toward the 11 point calculation so effectively, the point total would be 7 and the there would be no suspension.

For the driver with an otherwise clean record, who pleads to a 2,3,or 4 point ticket, taking a course will not make thier record "clean" again. The only way to actully remove a conviction from a driving record is via a formal motion to the court to reopen the case called a "motion coram nobis."

The New York DMV-Approved Driving Courses

The good news is that the DMV Point and Insurance Reduction courses, typically called "Defensive Driving Courses" or "Six Hour Courses",  are available live in classrooms and online.  The other news is that each course lasts for about 6 hours and there may be quizzes or tests.

Upon completion of your course, the provider will notify the DMV of your participation within 10 weeks and the DMV will apply the point reduction elegibility. The point reduction applies only to points assessed in the 18 months before the course and cannot be used as credit to reduce future points. Unfortunately,  if you are currently paying a New York  driver responsibility assessment, the point reduction will not reduce that assessment.  The only way to remove an assessment is with a coram nobis motion to the court as mentioned above.

Great job done courteously and professionally

Happy Client

I received a "move over" violation in August. After reading many on-line reviews, I contacted D. Bruffett. The paralegal, Shannon, was very helpful and friendly. I had a comprehensive call with D. Bruffett on the same day and he told me what the best outcome could be. Within 2 days, Shannon had gone over all the material I had sent and within a month an agreement was reached with the court as per David's original proposal. Am very happy with the service and efficiency...

Seth is a good lawyer

Seth and his team helped me out with a speeding ticket I got in Cortland. He was professional and courteous. I spoke with him with-in a hour of leaving a message with his office. All future correspondence was via email, but he was available by phone. I worked with one of his staff members as well. My 31 mph over limit (6 pts) was reduced to non-speeding 2 pts fine. I highly recommend Seth and the Azria Law Firm.

Clear Communications and Results

I contacted Azria & Bruffett to handle my traffic ticket after an accident in upstate New York. I found them via a random Google search and appreciated the clarity of the information presented on their website and in initial communications. Throughout the entire process they were extremely clear and helpful. My case got a little complicated for random reasons, and they went beyond their initial scope to pursue the case on my behalf. I really appreciate their work.

I am very pleased with the outcome of my case. I contacted Ralph Habib from the Azria & Bruffett group to represent me in my defense in connection with a speeding ticket. I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Habib and found him to be professional and diligent in this area of law. I felt his background and experience would undoubtedly be the right choice. Shannon Liparulo the Paralegal was great at keeping me informed as to the status and sharing the outcome of the case with me. She always answered and returned my calls and emails. I honestly recommend Mr. Ralph Habib and the team from Azria & Bruffett! Thank you Mr. Habib and Shannon. From Melton S
