Wisconsin Drivers: Effect of New York Traffic Ticket Convictions

By Seth M. Azria, Esq.

How Wisconsin DMV Handles New York Traffic Tickets

If you receive a traffic conviction in New York State, Wisconsin will be notified of the offense because both states are members of the Driver License Compact. While Wisconsin DMV does not assess points for most out-of-state infractions, the conviction will still be permanently entered onto your Wisconsin driving record.

Mandatory Wisconsin License Suspensions

Although Wisconsin does not transfer points for standard moving violations, Wisconsin will take action to suspend or revoke your operating privileges if the New York conviction corresponds to a offense carrying a mandatory suspension under Wisconsin law.

These severe convictions include:

Need Your WI Driving Record? If you are a Wisconsin-licensed driver, you can request an official copy of your record directly from the Wisconsin DOT Online Portal .

Insurance Surcharges & NY DMV Fines

Insurance Premium Hikes: Even if Wisconsin does not add points, your auto insurance provider will see the New York conviction during routine renewals. Moving violations frequently trigger significant rate increases or the loss of safe driver discounts.

NY DMV Driver Responsibility Assessment (DRA): Regardless of your home state license, the New York DMV maintains a shadow record for all drivers. Accumulating 6 or more points in New York within an 18-month period triggers mandatory Driver Responsibility Assessment fees starting at $300 ($100/year for 3 years). Failure to pay will result in a suspension of your privilege to drive in New York.

Mr. Azria - high professionalism

I worked with Mr. Azria for a speeding tickets that we got close to the Canadian border while in NY state (+25 miles vs speed limit).
The process went very smoothly and his professionalism saved me a lot of money and also a lots of point on my driving record.
I highly recommend him and his firm for any speeding/ traffic tickets.
A happy Ohio motorist.

Professional and reliable, highly recommended

After receiving a ticket upstate NY, I contacted Seth's firm based on the great reviews on this board and was really happy that I made this choice.

Seth explained the possible outcome in my case when I first called him and managed to achieve exactly what he told me, which shows that he is experienced and knowledgeable in his area of practice. He successfully negotiated with a DA a reduction of charges from a 6 point speeding to a non-speeding violation without me having to appear in court in person.

Monica, Seth's paralegal, kept me informed of all necessary details throughout the whole two month process and I received a response to every email that I sent to the firm.

I would highly recommend Seth's firm for anyone looking for reliable and professional attorney services.

Ticket resolution

Mr. Seth Azria handled my case competently and efficiently. I did not have to appear in court, which made the entire process really painless. He was successful in negotiating a reduction of a speeding ticket to a no-point non-moving violation, for which I am truly grateful. Even though I had a very good record prior to the event, that ticket would have impacted my finances quite negatively. Thanks to Mr. Azria this did not happen.
