Texas Drivers: Effect of New York Traffic Ticket Convictions

By Seth M. Azria, Esq.

How Texas DPS Handles New York Traffic Tickets

If you receive a traffic conviction in New York State, Texas will be notified of the offense because both states are members of the Driver License Compact.

If the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is notified by another state that you have not complied with the terms of a traffic citation, you will be notified that your Texas driver's license will be revoked until evidence is received that the citation has been satisfied. Furthermore, Texas DPS will review any out-of-state offense that, had it been committed in Texas, would be grounds for license suspension or disqualification. Need Your Texas Driving Record? If you are a Texas-licensed driver, you can order an official copy of your driver record directly through the Texas DPS Online Licensee Manager .

Insurance Premium Increases & NY DMV Assessments

Insurance Rate Increases: Most importantly, your insurance provider will almost certainly learn of your New York traffic conviction during routine renewal checks. A moving violation logged on your driving record can trigger significant annual premium hikes or lead to the loss of safe driver discounts.

NY DMV Driver Responsibility Assessment (DRA): Regardless of your home state license, the New York DMV maintains a record for all drivers within the state. Accumulating 6 or more points in New York within an 18-month period triggers mandatory Driver Responsibility Assessment fees starting at $300 ($100/year for 3 years). Failure to pay will result in a suspension of your privilege to drive in New York.

Google+ Review

Being from out of state, I was happy to find a law firm that was so easy to work with. They were able to get my ticket reduced and they did all the leg work for me. Everything was very straight forward and easy to understand. Hopefully I won't need them in the future but if I do, I know where to turn!

Happy Client

I received a "move over" violation in August. After reading many on-line reviews, I contacted D. Bruffett. The paralegal, Shannon, was very helpful and friendly. I had a comprehensive call with D. Bruffett on the same day and he told me what the best outcome could be. Within 2 days, Shannon had gone over all the material I had sent and within a month an agreement was reached with the court as per David's original proposal. Am very happy with the service and efficiency...
