Nevada Drivers: Effect of New York Traffic Ticket Convictions

By Seth M. Azria, Esq.

How Nevada DMV Handles New York Traffic Tickets

If you receive a traffic conviction in New York State, Nevada will be notified of the offense because both states belong to the Driver License Compact.

While out-of-state convictions become part of your official Nevada driving record, Nevada DMV rules state that out-of-state traffic convictions do not generate demerit points on your Nevada driver's license.

Need Your Nevada Driving Record? Nevada-licensed drivers can order an official copy of their driver history report online directly through the Nevada DMV Driver History Portal .

Insurance Premium Increases & NY DMV Assessments

Insurance Rate Increases: Even though Nevada does not add demerit points for out-of-state violations, your auto insurance carrier will likely see the New York conviction on your Nevada record during routine renewal checks. Moving violation convictions frequently lead to substantial annual premium surcharges or the loss of safe driver discounts.

NY DMV Driver Responsibility Assessment (DRA): Regardless of your home state license, the New York DMV maintains a shadow administrative record for all out-of-state drivers. Accumulating 6 or more points in New York within an 18-month window triggers mandatory Driver Responsibility Assessment fees starting at $300 ($100/year for 3 years). Failure to pay will result in a suspension of your driving privileges in New York.

Mr. Azria did a great job handled my speeding ticket! All it took was a quick telephone call and he took care of everything. He got my charge (and fine) reduced and I did not have to appear in court. Everything was handled via telephone & email.

Mr. Azria was great to deal with and he did exactly what he promised for a very reasonable fee. I hope I don't need him again, but I strongly recommend him.

Azria & Bruffett provided excellent representation for my 89-year old father who was charged with two tickets in Cortland, NY. For a very affordable fee, they were able to obtain dismissal of the moving violation resulting in a very small fine and court costs. I live in another state so this was especially convenient for me to help my dad and they saved me a lot of time. We spoke with an attorney and a paralegal guided my dad and I through the remainder of the process. The firm responded to all of my questions promptly. Highly recommended.
