Missouri Drivers: Effect of New York Traffic Ticket Convictions

By Seth M. Azria, Esq.

Missouri Adds New York Convictions to Missouri Records

Missouri and New York are both members of the Driver License Compact, meaning both states routinely share information about traffic convictions.

When the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) receives notification that a Missouri-licensed driver was convicted of a point-assessable violation in another state, Missouri will add the conviction to your driving record according to Missouri’s Violation Conviction Code .

Why Missourians Should Treat NY Traffic Tickets as if Received in Missouri

  • Home Record Impact: Missouri will record the out-of-state New York conviction directly on your Missouri driving record.
  • NY DMV Driver Responsibility Assessment (DRA): All drivers—regardless of the state that issued their license—who are ticketed in New York are subject to New York's Driver Responsibility Assessment law. This requires additional payment from any driver who accrues 6 or more points in New York within a 24-month period. For example, a single speeding ticket for 21 mph over the limit is 6 points immediately.
  • Insurance Surcharges: It is highly likely your Missouri auto insurance carrier will learn of the conviction when pulling your updated driving record, which may trigger significant premium rate increases or non-renewal of coverage.
Need Your Missouri Driving Record? Missouri-licensed drivers can request an official copy of their motor vehicle record directly through the Missouri Department of Revenue Driver Records Portal .

Positive: Professionalism, Quality, Responsiveness

I was stopped by a NY state trooper for speeding on my way back to Canada right before the border crossing on I-81 in Mar. 2020. (Please be mindful about the signs of reducing speed. I didn't slow down quick enough). It was the first time I was stopped by a cop and I had no idea what I should do about this ticket. I searched on Google and decided to contact Mr. Azria. He was very nice to talk to and clarified all the questions I had regarding the ticket. In the end I did the online traffic safety training by Jefferson County. Mr. Azria helped me organize my correspondence with the DA and the court all the way through. I was quite fortunate to find him to fight the ticket for me. He and his assistant was very professional and knowledgeable. My charge was reduced to "failed to signal" and 2 points deduction. I appreciate the advice and help from Mr. Azria.

Took care of business

I needed an expert to help me navigate a speeding ticket in the courts. I was from out of town and Seth was great at explaining the options. I left it in his hands and he was able to negotiate and took care of whatever was necessary. He made it extremely easy and I was happy with the results. Highly recommended.
