Florida Drivers: Impact of New York Traffic Convictions

By Seth M. Azria, Esq.

1. Points in Florida if Florida Gives Points for the NY Conviction

A Florida driver will receive points on their Florida record from a ticket in New York, if Florida assesses points for that specific violation.

How Points Transfer: An Example

If a Florida driver receives a ticket in New York for speeding 86 mph in a 65 mph zone, New York would assess 6 points for that conviction. However, Florida assesses 4 points for a speeding violation of 16 miles or more over the limit. As a result, the Florida driver would get 4 points on their Florida record. (For a speeding violation 15 miles or less over the limit, Florida assesses 3 points).

2. Florida Suspensions and Points

A Florida driver license will be suspended if a driver accumulates:

  • 12 points in a 12-month period: 30-day Suspension
  • 18 points in an 18-month period: 3-Month Suspension
  • 24 points in a 36-month period: 1-Year Suspension

3. Minimize the Effect of All Traffic Tickets

Our goal at Azria & Bruffett is to minimize the effect of your New York traffic ticket both in New York and in your home state.

Hidden NY Penalties: One important point to keep in mind is that even if you are licensed in Florida, the New York State DMV will still fine you if you accumulate 6 NY points in any 18-month period. These fines are called Driver Responsibility Assessments.

Happy Client

I received a "move over" violation in August. After reading many on-line reviews, I contacted D. Bruffett. The paralegal, Shannon, was very helpful and friendly. I had a comprehensive call with D. Bruffett on the same day and he told me what the best outcome could be. Within 2 days, Shannon had gone over all the material I had sent and within a month an agreement was reached with the court as per David's original proposal. Am very happy with the service and efficiency...

Speeding and registration violation

My experience was very professional and satisfactory. I was able to pay the attorney s fee up front. My attorney worked with the court and I paid a fine for a lowered charge in relationship to my registration. I did not receive points on my license for the speeding
